Instructional Design Considerations to F

Needs Assessment

December 2020

During the pandemic, as the world moved predominantly to virtual learning, I was doing research on what instructional designers should consider when designing virtual learning environments that focus on maintaining student engagement for higher education faculty.

Needs Assessment: Projects

AECT Rubric Evaluation

AECT 1.2

Candidates demonstrate the ability to select and use technological resources and processes to support student learning and to enhance their pedagogy.

The digital tools in the needs assessment are recommended based on research-based best practices. Citations from scholarly literature are included.

AECT 2.3

Candidates demonstrate an inquiry process that assesses the adequacy of learning and evaluates the instruction and implementation of educational technologies and processes grounded in reflective practice.

Using inquiry based learning, the needs assessment incorporates suggestions for student engagement based on research-based best practices and documentation from scholarly literature.

AECT 2.5

Candidates design and select media, technology, and processes that emphasize the diversity of our society as a multicultural community.

The needs assessment takes into account the variability of learners and provides alternate modes of representation following UDL guidelines when discussing options for student engagement with course materials, instructor, and peers.

ISTE-C Rubric Evaluation

ISTE 1-C

Cultivate a supportive coaching culture that encourages educators and leaders to achieve a shared vision and individual goals.

The needs assessment describes how making specific instructional design decisions will impact the engagement of students and takes into account the variability of learners and provides alternate modes of representation following UDL guidelines when discussing options for student engagement with course materials, instructor, and peers.

ISTE 3-C

Partner with educators to evaluate the efficacy of digital learning content and tools to inform procurement decisions and adoption.

The needs assessment includes relevant research findings and include ideas for teachers to seek out professional development on specific topics that encourage student engagement.

ISTE 4-C

Collaborate with educators to design accessible and active digital learning environments that accommodate learner variability.

The needs assessment details ways to design learning environments that are accessible and active for student engagement strategies and accommodate many different types of learners following UDL guidelines.

ISTE 5-A

Design professional learning based on needs assessments and frameworks for working with adults to support their cultural, social-emotional and learning needs.

The needs assessment attempts to make recommendations on how to build learning environments that are responsive to the needs of learners and teachers.
